Hi everyone, newb to this site.
tons of great info so far!!
heres my info...
My father past away this year the week before mothers day. (They were divorced, so it was like happy mothers da.....) When he past, one thing out of the estate i really wanted was my first car. 1987 Fiero GT (5 speed)
I got the car shipped back to Illinois (where I live) and am currently knee deep in attempting a 3800 swap.
so far I've got the car in the garage
interior stripped (being replaced)
entire engine/ trans/ cradle assembly is dropped and sitting next to the car
the engine bay cleaned up a bit
ecu and engine wiring harness removed with engine
body wiring harness pulled inside the cab for now
...
and now i'm at a stand still.
I have a few options on motors at this point available to me, including both n/a and s/c'd complete assemblies with wiring harness' and ecu's.
I am wanting to possibly go forced induction at a later time, but for now would like to get the car drivable with an n/a 3800. I will be building a motor with a s/c long block either way to save time later.
I will be doing custom mounts to save my self the headache of bad parts.
I will not be running a/c as i have completely stripped the entire h-vac box and all coolant and a/c lines. (its not a DD car and will be used primarily for play time on nice days)
These are the problems i'm facing and have been searching but not finding exact answers on...
clutch setup: camaro flywheel machined... but what does it get machined too??
Is there other flywheel options?
What pressure plate?
What clutch plate?
Wiring adaption: I will be getting an engine wiring harness with what ever motor i purchase, but am a little lost... a lot lost on exactly how to connect the Fiero body harness and engine harness and any other wiring headaches I'm sure the rest of you have already dealt with. I understand how to re-pin, but what I'm looking for is details on which connectors what wires etc..
Exhaust: Lucky for me a good friend and Nitrous Express supplier is the owner of a Meineke in the area, and does AMAZING exhaust work. But would save plenty of time installing manifolds or headers and possibly a y-pipe made for the swap or that can be modified to work.
What are my options??
Intake: I will be running an f-body intake, earlier 4th gen (i.e. the slanted intake) with my setup. I haven't decided on port or starboard facing yet, but would like to hear opinions and ideas. |

As I'm doing more searching here is another thing i just thought of.
will it matter which coolant hose goes to which side?
- basically can the system flow either way? (with the tubing flow)
I don't see why not.. |

added:
-connecting fuel lines to the 3.8 fuel rails?
-which of the two lines is the feed line?
-after market regulator or factory 3.8 regulator?
-which 255 pump is everyone using?
-alternator location, does it have to go on lower right (front forward side of engine)?
-belt routing if only running w/p and alt.?
today I removed the engine and trans from the cradle, and then separated the two.
during this process I found out my trans (getrag) is broken on the case (motor side)
the shaft for the T/O bearing, where it enters the case near the pivot arm, on the inner side, what would be around the copper bushing is completely gone.
the copper bushing was still in place, but the entire shaft had play and the bottom bearing is ate and gone.
this means I now need to either have a shop attempt welding and re-boring the hole for the shaft
or find that case half used
or get another trans
two or all of these options I am still going to have to find the shafts "lower bearing" and "upper bushing" from a parts supplier.
GM DOES NOT CARRY THIS PART, believe me I work there, I checked for them!
any ideas/ options? |
