If you already have an L36 (3800 NA) then just do a top end swap.

Do some research- find an engine, and swap it in given the technical documents on here. Also if you go to mymonte under the 3800 section, I have a step by step walkthrough that I wrote specifically for the 5th gen montes (if you have a 3100) shortly after I did my own swap.

Cost depends on your luck and skill. Most get a complete engine and trans with around 50-75k miles for $1500 complete- plus then you'll need a wiring harness and other assorted parts. Assuming you can do the swap yourself and don't have to pay, budget maybe $2500-3000 total just to be safe. You'll probably have money leftover, but you'd rather over budget than be sitting on a non-running car without the funds to complete it.
A stock L67 puts out 240 crank horsepower- about 200 wheel horsepower. The more mods, the more power.
Yes- its worth it, especially if you have a 3100. _________________ 96 monte carlo LS-L67
