Yeah, someone around here finally shut up alot of people...
The cavalier went back into the shop for the winter mods, the M90 supercharged Ld9 was pulled in favor of something a little bigger and a little crazier. After a little brainstorming over a few drinks we decided the northstar would make for a unique and interesting project, and the cutting began. As always there is much thanks to be sent to close friends Henry and Jon who helped make this happen.
The engine bay- tubbed, filled, smoothed and built unibody rails
The clutch- Spec stage 2plus, with custom flywheel
Control arms- TIG welded seams, filled holes, smoothed, shortened 15mm
Engine mounted to subframe, custom mounts, alternator mounting bracket
Headers built
An engine in the bay again, wired up and ready for plumbing-cooling fuel and vacuum

Very nice indeed... tho I'm surprised they didn't opt for the 99 N-body aluminum control arms.. lighter and stronger than the J-body steel ones.
Any clearance problems with the exhaust going under the subframe like that? I figured that might be a little too low to the ground for comfort...? _________________

hrm, the engine being so close to the upper frame lip would worry me... do you have any plans on just replacing it?
other than that ... be sure to get us some videos! _________________

Its not my car, its someone in my car club.
THe engine is pretty much solid mounted, so it wont move too much at all. _________________ 2 wrongs dont make a right, but 3 lefts do... |

If you look at one of the middle pics you can see there is a bit of clearanse as well, but yes the engine is on poly mounts that have very little give (less than the prothane mounts i used to run) |

| Well never thought I would see someone pull this off. I have looked at both the top and bottom of these lil Jcars wondering if I could do something like this, and really wanting to, now I know ya can. How many options did you have to lose toshoehorn it in? I always thought the brake booster would be the item to get in the way, but looks like you still have power brakes too. I always liked those engines till I seen the number of leaks they have though the bottom, but I bet you find of ton of them in the scrap yards. Anyhow good job and love to see some vids too. |
